ASTM E1053 FOR DISINFECTANTS
Testing Disinfectant on Non-Porous Surfaces
ASTM E1053 is a standard practice used to assess the virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants intended for use on inanimate, non-porous environmental surfaces.
During an ASTM E1053 test, a defined amount of virus is applied to a non-porous carrier, such as glass or stainless steel, and allowed to dry. The contaminated surface is then treated with the test disinfectant for a specified contact time. At the end of the exposure period, the virus is recovered from the surface and the remaining infectious virus is quantified.
The amount of infectious virus recovered from the treated carriers is compared with the appropriate virus controls to determine the reduction in viral infectivity produced by the disinfectant.

Our Approach
To perform an ASTM E1053 test, a defined amount of infectious virus is applied to an appropriate non-porous carrier and allowed to dry under controlled conditions. This creates a contaminated surface representative of the intended application of the disinfectant.
The dried virus is then exposed to the test product for the specified contact time.
At the end of the contact period, the virus is recovered from the carrier using an appropriate recovery medium and the activity of the disinfectant is neutralised or otherwise stopped using a validated procedure.
The recovered virus is serially diluted and added to susceptible cultured host cells. The viral titre recovered following disinfectant treatment is compared with the relevant controls. This allows the virucidal efficacy of the product to be expressed as a log10 reduction in viral infectivity.
Appropriate controls are included to confirm successful virus recovery and to assess potential interference from factors such as product cytotoxicity or residual disinfectant activity.
