Evaluate the Cytotoxicity of Your Product
The MTT assay is a colorimetric method used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of products and compounds in cultured cells by measuring cellular metabolic activity as an indicator of cell viability.
During the assay, cells are exposed to the test product for a defined period and subsequently incubated with MTT. Metabolically active cells convert MTT into purple formazan crystals, which are solubilised and quantified by measuring absorbance.
The results are compared with appropriate controls to determine relative cell viability and, when required, the cytotoxic concentration of the test product.

Our Approach
To perform an MTT cytotoxicity assay, an appropriate mammalian cell line is exposed to the test product at defined concentrations and for a specified period of time.
Following exposure, cells are incubated with MTT, which is converted by metabolically active cells into purple formazan crystals. The crystals are then solubilised and the absorbance is measured using a microplate reader.
The absorbance obtained from treated cells is compared with the appropriate untreated or vehicle controls to calculate relative cell viability (%) and assess the cytotoxic effect of the test product.
When a range of concentrations is evaluated, a dose–response curve can be generated to determine the CC50, defined as the concentration of the test product that reduces cell viability by 50%.
Different cell lines, product concentrations and exposure times can be evaluated depending on the intended application of the product.
